W.C. Cumens, Jr.

1 Thessalonians 4:13 & 14 Now also we would not have you ignorant, brethren, about those who fall asleep, that you may not grieve as the rest do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will also bring with Him through Jesus those who have fallen asleep... On August 13, 2010 at 12:22 a.m. W.C. Cumens, Jr., a husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, friend, businessman, but most of all Christian died. He was 86 years old. W.C. is survived by his wife, Ella Gaynell Cumens. They were married for over 68 years. W.C. is also survived by daughter Carolyn Faye Cox, son-in-law, George Finley Cox, son, Phillip Stanley Cumens, daughter-in-law Judy Cumens, grandson, Timothy Curtis Sauls, granddaughter-in-law Jerri Jo Sauls, grandson Phillip Stanley Cumens, Jr. and his fiance Erika Williams, great grandchildren Timothy Wilson Sauls, Jon Luke Sauls and Hallie Kate Sauls. Other surviving members of his family are brother Travis Vernon Cumens, sister-in-law Wanell Cumens, sister Zadie Maize Weaver, and brother-in-law ML Weaver. W.C. was preceded in death by his father Charlie Cumens, mother, Pearl Cumens or more lovingly referred to as Mama Cumens, stepmother, Sylvia Cumens, and sister Blond Cumens. W.C. and Gaynell are also preceded in death by their day old infant son, John William Cumens. With an entrepreneurial nature, a strong desire to succeed, and a lot of direction from Jesus Christ, W.C. positioned his life not only to be blessed but to be a blessing to his family and many others. W.C. was a great example of the Abrahamic Covenant Blessing in action. You know - the Blessing. The Blessing that over takes you and changes the area around. W.C. Cumens was a founding charter member of East Haleyville Church of God. During the late 1960's, W.C. was one of 5 original investors of Holiday Homes located in Lynn, Alabama from which he retired. In August of 1973, W.C. formed Free State Lumber Company which he worked at until his death. W.C. served in the United States Army and was a standing member of the American Legion for over 50 years. For many years he served on the board of Compass Bank in Haleyville. Many may remember his love of flying his plane and what a great story teller he was of days gone by. Some will remember his enjoyment of picking the guitar at his church and home. With his passing, we are all acutely reminded that our visit in this world is just that, a visit. The nature of our lives are but a wisp of vapor that is visible for a little while and then disappears. We are travelers in this land moving to our final home. But one day without any doubt, as 1 Thessalonians 4:16 states - the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a loud cry of summons, with the shout of an archangel, and with the blast of the trumpet of God. And those who have departed this life in Christ will rise first. We give no glory to death but all glory and honor to our wonderful Lord and resurrected Savior Jesus Christ- our faith, our hope, our glory! We love you, Daddy Cumens! Until we meet again!
