Melissa married Keith Alsup on December 3, 1971. She worked at Arrow Shirt Factory upon completion of high school, but later retired from the United States Postal Service after 30 years of service. Throughout her life she enjoyed crocheting, cooking, baking, but most of all watching her children and grandchildren in all their school activities. She was a major supporter of Lynn High School and Lynn Athletics and spent many hours volunteering and fundraising for the school. In recent years, she especially enjoyed watching her grandchildren and was known as “Mimi” to countless Lynn Bears. She was a lifelong member of Old Union Baptist Church and served as Sunday School teacher and treasurer. She was also well known for her passion of singing for her Lord. She was preceded in death by her father, Mayo McKleroy; sister, Tina Miles; and brother-in-law, William Horace Stephens. Survivors include her loving husband of fifty years, Keith; son, Brad (Magen); daughter, Delisha Sims (Brian), grandchildren, Hannah Grace and Will Alsup, Joley and Ty Sims, Sam Miller, Amy Smith (Austin); great-granddaughter, Charlie Lawrence; mother, Louise McKleroy; brother-in-law, Derrell Stephens (Linda); sister-in-law, Carol Overby (Dan); sister-in-law, Kathy Stephens; and a host of nieces, nephews and close friends. Melissa began her fight with ovarian cancer in 2007. Since then, she has battled multiple relapses and in March 2020 was diagnosed with a glioblastoma likely caused from her treatments for ovarian cancer. Throughout her battle with cancer, her fight and determination were an inspiration to many. In lieu of flowers we ask that donations be made to the Laura Crandall Brown Foundation for ovarian cancer research or a hospice service of your choice.
